Top Places to Visit

Ala-Too Square — Bishkek's vast central square dominated by a statue of Manas, the legendary Kyrgyz hero. Watch the flag-changing ceremony, explore the State Historical Museum, and soak up Soviet-era grandeur.

Osh Bazaar — A massive, colourful bazaar selling everything from spices, dried fruits, and kumys to Kyrgyz felt crafts, saddles, and traditional hats. The beating heart of Bishkek's commercial life.

Ala Archa National Park — A stunning alpine national park just 40 km south of the city, with hiking trails through spruce forests to glaciers, waterfalls, and peaks over 4,000 metres. An easy half-day escape.

Burana Tower — A partially ruined 11th-century minaret rising from the Chuy Valley steppe, the remnant of the ancient Silk Road city of Balasagun. Climb the narrow internal staircase for views across to the mountains.

State Historical Museum — Housed in a monumental Soviet building on Ala-Too Square, this museum covers Kyrgyz history from petroglyphs and Silk Road artefacts to Soviet collectivization and independence.

Local Food

Beshbarmak — The national dish — flat, hand-rolled noodles topped with boiled mutton or horse meat, served in a rich onion broth. Eaten with the hands at celebrations and gatherings.

Manti — Large steamed dumplings filled with spiced lamb and onion, served with sour cream or vinegar. The Kyrgyz version is hearty and generously sized — two or three make a full meal.

Lagman — Hand-pulled noodles in a thick, savoury broth with lamb, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs. The fried version (boso lagman) features stir-fried noodles with vegetables and meat.

Lepyoshka (Nan) — Round, tandoor-baked flatbread stamped with decorative patterns. Served with every meal across Kyrgyzstan. Break it by hand — cutting bread with a knife is considered disrespectful.
