Pampulha Architectural Complex — Oscar Niemeyer's 1940s modernist complex around an artificial lake includes the Church of S\u00e3o Francisco de Assis, the Art Museum, the Casa do Baile, and the Yacht Club. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pra\u00e7a da Liberdade — A beautifully landscaped square ringed by impressive buildings converted into museums and cultural centres, including the MM Gervais, Memorial Minas Gerais, and Espa\u00e7o TIM UFMG.

Mercado Central — BH's iconic market since 1929 with over 400 stalls selling cheese, cacha\u00e7a, spices, crafts, and street food. Try the famous queijo minas, doce de leite, and draft beer with torresmo.

Igreja S\u00e3o Francisco de Assis — The jewel of Pampulha, with its parabolic roof and Portinari tile murals. So controversial when built in 1943 that the Catholic Church refused to consecrate it for 14 years.

Museu de Arte da Pampulha — Originally a casino designed by Niemeyer, now housing contemporary art exhibitions. The building itself \u2014 with its signature curves and lake views \u2014 is the main attraction.

Local Food

P\u00e3o de Queijo — Minas Gerais' gift to the world: warm, chewy cheese bread balls made with tapioca flour and queijo minas. Eaten at any hour, best fresh from the oven with coffee.

Feij\u00e3o Tropeiro — A hearty dish of beans cooked with cassava flour, eggs, sausage, pork rinds, and collard greens. The sustenance of the tropeiros (mule drivers) who once crossed Minas Gerais.

Torresmo com Cerveja — Crispy pork belly crackling served with cold draft beer (chopp) at a boteco \u2014 BH's favourite social ritual. Every neighbourhood has its champion boteco.

Doce de Leite — Caramelised milk spread that Minas Gerais produces by the tonne. Eaten with cheese (Romeo and Juliet), on bread, or straight from the jar. An essential mineiro flavour.
