Top Places to Visit

Kalemegdan Fortress — A sprawling fortress complex at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, with Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman layers. The surrounding park offers stunning river views.

Knez Mihailova Street — The main pedestrian boulevard lined with elegant 19th-century buildings, boutiques, galleries, and street performers. It connects Republic Square to Kalemegdan.

Temple of Saint Sava — A monumental Serbian Orthodox church modeled on Hagia Sophia, with a recently completed golden mosaic interior that is breathtaking. Free entry.

Skadarlija — A cobblestoned street of traditional kafanas (taverns) where live folk musicians play as you feast on Serbian cuisine. Belgrade's answer to Montmartre.

Ada Ciganlija — A river island turned peninsula with an artificial lake, beaches, sports facilities, and forested walking paths. Locals flock here in summer to swim, cycle, and barbecue.

Local Food

Cevapi — Small grilled minced-meat sausages served in lepinja (flatbread) with raw onions and kajmak (creamy dairy spread). Belgrade's most beloved street food.

Burek — Flaky phyllo pastry filled with meat, cheese, or spinach. Best enjoyed hot from a pekara (bakery) with a cup of yogurt for breakfast.

Karadjordjeva Snicla — A breaded and fried rolled veal or pork steak stuffed with kajmak — named after Serbian revolutionary leader Karadjordje. Rich and satisfying.

Ajvar — A smoky roasted red pepper and eggplant relish that Serbians make in huge batches each autumn. Served as a spread with bread, cheese, and grilled meats.
