Top Places to Visit

Ver-o-Peso Market — One of the largest open-air markets in Latin America, dating to the 17th century. Hundreds of stalls sell exotic Amazonian fish, fruits, herbs, a\u00e7a\u00ed, and traditional remedies.

Esta\u00e7\u00e3o das Docas — Three beautifully restored iron warehouses on the river now house restaurants, bars, galleries, and a theatre. The perfect spot for sunset drinks overlooking Gua\u00e7ar\u00e1 Bay.

Bas\u00edlica de Nazar\u00e9 — This grand basilica is the focal point of the C\u00edrio de Nazar\u00e9, Brazil\u2019s largest religious procession drawing over 2 million people each October. The interior is richly decorated.

Mangal das Gar\u00e7as — A beautifully landscaped park with mangroves, a butterfly house, a hummingbird garden, a lighthouse viewpoint, and free-roaming egrets and scarlet ibises.

Forte do Presepio — The founding site of Bel\u00e9m, built in 1616 by the Portuguese. Now houses the Museu do Encontro with exhibits on indigenous and colonial history. Great views of the bay.

Local Food

Pato no Tucupi — Bel\u00e9m\u2019s signature dish: roast duck simmered in tucupi (a yellow sauce from manioc root) with jambu leaves that tingle on the tongue. Unmissable.

Tacac\u00e1 — A hot broth of tucupi, tapioca gum, dried shrimp, and jambu served in a gourd bowl. Sold by tacac\u00e1 vendors (tacacazeiras) on street corners every afternoon.

Maniçoba — Called the \u2018Amazon feijoada\u2019 \u2014 ground manioc leaves slow-cooked for a week with smoked meats and sausages. Rich, earthy, and deeply flavourful.

A\u00e7a\u00ed Paraense — Forget the sweet bowls elsewhere \u2014 in Bel\u00e9m, a\u00e7a\u00ed is served pure or with a touch of sugar alongside fried fish, tapioca, or farinha. Thick, fresh, and earthy.
