Forbidden City — The world's largest palace complex, home to 24 emperors across 500 years. Nearly 1,000 buildings within 72 hectares of crimson walls and golden roofs. Book tickets online in advance — daily visitor caps apply.

Great Wall at Mutianyu — The most visitor-friendly section of the Great Wall, 70 km north of Beijing. Cable car access, fewer crowds than Badaling, and stunning watchtower views across forested mountains. Allow a full day.

Temple of Heaven — Where emperors prayed for good harvests for 500 years. The circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is an architectural masterpiece. The surrounding park fills with locals doing tai chi, dancing, and singing.

Summer Palace — A vast imperial garden covering 297 hectares, dominated by Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill. The 728-metre Long Corridor is painted with over 14,000 unique scenes. Boat rides and hillside temples offer hours of exploration.

Local Food

Peking Duck — Beijing's most famous dish — lacquered duck roasted until the skin is thin and crispy, carved tableside, and wrapped in thin pancakes with scallion, cucumber, and hoisin sauce. Quanjude and Da Dong are legendary.

Jianbing (Chinese Crepe) — Beijing's favourite breakfast — a thin batter crepe on a griddle with egg, crispy fried dough, scallions, coriander, and spicy sauce. Freshly made at street carts for 8-15 CNY. The perfect grab-and-go meal.

Zhajiangmian (Fried Sauce Noodles) — Thick wheat noodles topped with a fermented soybean and pork sauce, served with shredded cucumber, bean sprouts, and radish. A hearty Beijing home-style dish that is deeply satisfying.

Beijing Lamb Hot Pot — Thin-sliced lamb cooked in a traditional charcoal-fired copper pot of boiling water. Dip in sesame sauce with fermented tofu, chilli oil, and coriander. A communal winter staple.
