Top Places to Visit

Old City (Icheri Sheher) — A UNESCO-listed medieval walled city within modern Baku, with narrow stone lanes, caravanserais, mosques, and the Maiden Tower. Dating from the 12th century, it feels like stepping into a different era. Carpet shops, tea houses, and the scent of pomegranate fill the air.

Flame Towers — Three flame-shaped glass skyscrapers that dominate Baku's skyline, symbolising Azerbaijan's fire heritage. At night, LED screens covering the facades create a mesmerising display of flickering flames visible across the Caspian bay.

Heydar Aliyev Centre — A stunning flowing white building by Zaha Hadid that looks like a frozen wave. Inside, exhibitions on Azerbaijani culture, history, and art. The architecture alone — with no right angles — is worth the visit. One of the most photographed buildings in the Caucasus.

Maiden Tower (Qız Qalası) — A 29-metre cylindrical stone tower of disputed origin — possibly Zoroastrian, possibly a defensive fortress, possibly an astronomical observatory. Dating to at least the 12th century, it is Baku's most recognisable symbol. Climb to the top for Old City views.

Baku Boulevard (Bulvar) — A scenic 16-km waterfront promenade along the Caspian Sea with parks, fountains, cafés, and views of the Flame Towers. Extended multiple times since its creation in 1909, it is the favourite gathering place for Bakuvians.

Local Food

Plov (Azerbaijani Pilaf) — Azerbaijan's national dish — saffron-infused rice served with a mix of lamb, dried fruits (plums, apricots, chestnuts), and caramelised onions. Each region has its variation. The rice should be fluffy with a golden crust (qazmaq) at the bottom.

Kebab (Kabab) — Minced lamb or chicken shaped around wide skewers and grilled over charcoal, served with flatbread, grilled tomatoes, onion, and sumac. Azerbaijani kebab traditions date back centuries. Lüle kebab (minced) and tikə kebab (cubed) are the main styles.

Qutab — Paper-thin stuffed flatbreads cooked on a saj (convex iron griddle). Filled with either minced lamb and onion or herbs and greens, then folded into half-moons. Drizzled with butter and sumac. Simple, cheap, and incredibly moreish.

Piti — A slow-cooked lamb and chickpea stew served in an individual clay pot. The broth is poured out first and eaten as soup with bread, then the meat and vegetables are mashed together for the second course. A ritual as much as a meal.
