Palacio de los López — An imposing neoclassical palace built in the 1860s, overlooking the Bay of Asunci\u00f3n. Beautifully illuminated at night, it's the seat of Paraguay's government and a national icon.

Panteón Nacional de los Héroes — Modelled after Les Invalides in Paris, this domed pantheon houses the remains of Paraguay's national heroes and war casualties. The changing of the guard is a solemn spectacle.

Mercado 4 — A sprawling labyrinth of stalls selling leather goods, ñandutí lace, yerba mate, electronics, and street food. Overwhelming and utterly authentic — the real Asunci\u00f3n experience.

Costanera de Asunción — A modern waterfront boulevard stretching several kilometres with bike paths, skate parks, food trucks, and sunset views over the river toward the Chaco.

Catedral Metropolitana — Built in 1845, this neoclassical cathedral anchors the Plaza de los Héroes. Its modest exterior belies a richly decorated interior with religious artwork.

Local Food

Sopa Paraguaya — Despite the name, it's not a soup — it's a savoury cornbread made with corn flour, cheese, onions, and eggs. Rich, dense, and uniquely Paraguayan.

Empanada — Paraguayan empanadas are deep-fried pockets of dough stuffed with ground beef, chicken, or cheese. Crispy outside, juicy inside — found at every street corner.

Asado a la Estaca — Whole beef ribs slow-roasted on iron stakes around an open fire pit. The meat is seasoned only with salt and smoke — Paraguayan barbecue at its most primal.

Chipa Guazú — A creamy corn casserole made with fresh corn kernels, cheese, and eggs. Often served at gatherings and holidays alongside asado.
