Monasterio de Santa Catalina — A stunning 20,000 m² monastery founded in 1579, painted in vibrant ochre, blue, and terracotta. A self-contained citadel with streets, plazas, cloisters, and a fascinating collection of colonial art.

Plaza de Armas — One of Peru's most beautiful plazas, flanked by the massive baroque Cathedral, colonial arcades, and palm trees. The imposing Basilica Cathedral spans the entire north side.

Colca Canyon — Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, Colca is home to soaring Andean condors, pre-Inca terraces, hot springs, and Collagua villages. A 2-day trek to the oasis at the bottom is unforgettable.

Local Food

Rocoto Relleno — A fiery rocoto pepper stuffed with minced meat, onions, peanuts, and olives, topped with melted cheese and baked. Arequipa's signature dish — spicy and delicious.

Chupe de Camarones — A rich, hearty shrimp chowder with potatoes, corn, milk, eggs, and local river shrimp from the Majes valley. Arequipa's beloved comfort food.

Adobo Arequipeño — Pork marinated in chicha and spices, slow-cooked in a clay pot and served for breakfast with bread. A Sunday morning tradition at picanterías.

Queso Helado — Not actually cheese — a frozen dessert made with milk, cinnamon, coconut, and vanilla, churned by hand in a copper bowl over ice. Unique to Arequipa.
