Top Places to Visit

Arco de Santa Catalina — The most photographed landmark in Guatemala — a saffron-yellow arch spanning 5a Avenida Norte with Volcán de Agua perfectly framed behind it. Built in the 17th century so nuns could cross the street between convent buildings without being seen.

Volcán Acatenango — A challenging overnight hike to 3,976 metres rewarded with front-row views of neighbouring Volcán Fuego erupting every 15-20 minutes. Watching lava explode against the night sky from your campsite at the summit is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Central Park (Parque Central) — The grand central plaza surrounded by the Cathedral, City Hall, and colonial arcades. The Fuente de las Sirenas (Mermaid Fountain) dates from 1739. Local vendors, shoe shiners, and families gather under jacaranda trees.

Catedral de Santiago — Once the largest cathedral in Central America, destroyed by earthquakes in 1773. The facade and two front chapels have been restored, but the vast roofless nave behind remains a haunting ruin open to the sky — a powerful symbol of Antigua's history.

Iglesia de La Merced — A stunning bright-yellow baroque church with intricate stucco decoration that survived the earthquakes. The ornate facade is one of the finest examples of Antiguan baroque. The fountain in the ruined cloister behind is one of the largest colonial fountains in the Americas.

Local Food

Pepián — Guatemala's national dish — a thick, rich stew of chicken or pork in a sauce of ground roasted seeds (pepitoria, sesame), dried chillies, and spices. A dish of pure Maya-Spanish fusion, best found at market comedores.

Kak'ik — A ceremonial Maya turkey soup coloured red with achiote and flavoured with coriander, chilli, and tomato. Originally from the Q'eqchi' Maya of Alta Verapaz, it is now a national culinary treasure.

Tostadas — Crispy fried tortillas topped with guacamole, black beans, shredded chicken, and pickled vegetables. A cheap and crunchy street snack found at vendors around the central park and market for 5-10 GTQ.

Desayuno Chapín — The classic Guatemalan breakfast — eggs, refried black beans, fried plantains, fresh cheese, cream, tortillas, and coffee. Hearty, colourful, and served at every hotel and comedor. 'Chapín' is slang for Guatemalan.
