Amman Citadel (Jabal al-Qal'a) — The ancient hilltop fortress with ruins spanning Bronze Age, Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad periods. The Temple of Hercules columns and the Umayyad Palace are highlights. The panoramic views over downtown Amman at sunset are magnificent.

Roman Theatre — A remarkably well-preserved 2nd-century Roman theatre carved into the hillside, seating 6,000 spectators. Built during the reign of Antoninus Pius, it is still used for cultural events. The acoustics remain perfect.

Rainbow Street — The most atmospheric street in Amman, lined with cafés, art galleries, antique shops, and restaurants in restored Ottoman-era stone houses. The best spot for people-watching, evening strolls, and sunset views.

King Abdullah I Mosque — Amman's most striking mosque with its massive blue dome visible across the city. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome (dress modestly; abayas provided for women). The interior holds 3,000 worshippers beneath a beautiful dome.

Jordan Museum — Jordan's premier museum housing the Dead Sea Scrolls (some of the oldest biblical manuscripts), the Ain Ghazal statues (9,000-year-old human figures), and comprehensive exhibits on Jordan's history from prehistoric times.

Local Food

Mansaf — Jordan's national dish and the pride of Bedouin culture — lamb slow-cooked in dried yoghurt sauce (jameed) served over a mound of rice with toasted almonds and pine nuts. Traditionally eaten with the right hand at celebrations.

Falafel & Hummus — Amman's most beloved street food — crispy fried chickpea balls served in fresh pita with tahini, pickles, and fresh vegetables. Downtown shops sell falafel sandwiches for 0.35-0.50 JOD. Hashem Restaurant is legendary.

Makloubeh — An upside-down rice dish layered with fried aubergine, cauliflower, and chicken, then flipped onto a serving platter. The dramatic flipping moment is a highlight. A Palestinian-Jordanian home cooking favourite.

Knafeh — A beloved Middle Eastern dessert of shredded filo pastry filled with white cheese, soaked in sugar syrup, and sprinkled with crushed pistachios. The Nabulsi version from Habibah Sweets downtown is famous across the region.
