The Casbah — A UNESCO World Heritage Site of whitewashed Ottoman-era houses cascading down a steep hillside. Narrow winding alleys, mosques, palaces, and a living community that has occupied this citadel for centuries.

Notre Dame d'Afrique — A stunning 19th-century basilica perched on a cliff 124m above the sea with panoramic views of the Bay of Algiers. The inscription reads 'Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims.' A symbol of coexistence.

Local Food

Couscous — Algeria's national dish — hand-rolled semolina steamed over a rich stew of lamb, chicken, or vegetables with chickpeas, turnips, and a spicy harissa broth. Friday lunch is traditionally couscous day.

Bourek — Crispy deep-fried pastry rolls filled with minced meat, egg, and onions — or a sweet version with almonds and honey. A Ramadan staple that is available year-round at street stalls.

Chakhchoukha — A hearty dish of torn flatbread (rougag) soaked in a spiced tomato and chickpea stew with lamb. A specialty of eastern Algeria that is widely available in Algiers restaurants.
