Top Places to Visit

National Museum of Ethiopia — Houses the famous 3.2-million-year-old fossilized skeleton of Lucy (Dinknesh), one of the oldest known human ancestors. Also features Ethiopian art, royal regalia, and ethnographic collections.

Holy Trinity Cathedral — The most important cathedral of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, with stunning stained glass windows, elaborate murals, and the tombs of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen. Beautiful architecture.

Merkato — A vast, chaotic, and utterly fascinating market covering several square kilometers. Specialized sections for spices, coffee, textiles, recycled goods, and everything else imaginable. Go with a guide.

Entoto Mountain & Maryam Church — The mountain above Addis where Emperor Menelik II founded the city in 1886. Entoto Maryam Church is an octagonal masterpiece. The eucalyptus forests and city views from the summit are magnificent.

Red Terror Martyrs' Memorial Museum — A small but powerful museum documenting the brutal Derg military regime (1974-1991). Photographs, personal belongings of victims, and testimonies tell the story of Ethiopia's years of terror.

Local Food

Injera & Wot — Ethiopia's iconic meal — spongy, sour injera flatbread (made from teff) topped with various wots (stews): spicy doro wot (chicken), key wot (beef), and yemisir wot (red lentils). Eaten communally with your hands.

Beyaynetu — A colorful vegetarian platter served on fasting days (Wednesdays and Fridays) — lentils, split peas, cabbage, beets, collard greens, and potatoes on injera. Some of Ethiopia's most flavorful cooking.

Kitfo — Ethiopia's steak tartare — finely minced raw beef seasoned with mitmita (chili spice) and niter kibbeh (spiced clarified butter). Served leb leb (slightly warmed) or fully raw. A delicacy not for the faint-hearted.

Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony — Coffee was born in Ethiopia — the buna ceremony is a ritual of roasting green beans, grinding them, and brewing three rounds (abol, tona, baraka) in a jebena pot. An hour-long social experience with popcorn and incense.
